The “Haversack” was bag issued by both armies, Confederate and Union alike. The haversack bag’s intended purpose was to carry food rations. Soldiers also carried personal items such as toothbrush, diaries, pipes, tobacco, and housewife (term used for sewing kit). The Union army issued a canvas bag that was painted with black tar like paint to help weather proof it. The Confederate Army utilized a wide variety of styles pending on material at hand, including curtains and carpets (hence the term “carpet bag”).
