Shoes were a necessity for both the Confederate and Union armies.  The main issued shoe for the Union was called brogans.  Due to supply constraints, the Confederate army always faced the challenge of having enough shoes for their soldiers.  The Confederate soldiers wore a wide variety of shoes and boots depending on what was available.  Many Confederate soldiers wore captured Union brogans.  Some Confederates had to march barefooted until they were able to obtain shoes.  Almost all shoes of from that era were made from leather.  They had a leather upper as well as leather soles. The soles of some shoes were stitched while others had wood pegs to hold them to the upper body.  Leather soles with wood pegs or stitching only last so long against long daily marches of up to 30 miles.
